Radar Detector Laws in California width=If you’re considering buying a radar detector, some people will discourage you, saying their use is illegal and could get you in trouble. Most of the potential buyers are asking questions such as are radar detectors legal in California or will I get in trouble for using a radar detector in my state. The answer to this is that there are no federal laws regarding the use of radar detectors but there are Radar Detector Laws in California.

Although some states do have laws banning the use of radar detectors, it is safe to use them in the majority of states. Needless to say, their use is banned in Washington DC for obvious reasons. However, some states such as California and Florida are tricky when it comes to radar detector laws. As of now, they have no rules banning the use of radar detectors, which is likely to remain the same, but they do have regulations regarding windshield mounting. These laws prohibit mounting any object on the windshield, which includes radar detectors as well.

So at the end of the day, it’s about your luck. You may be able to get away with a radar detector if it is hidden well or if the cop is friendly, but if he wants to fine you, he’s well within his rights to do so. One of the solutions to tackling this problem is to use radar detectors that can be unmounted easily or one with RDD feature so that you can turn it off if a cop in your proximity is trying to hunt down the likes of you. While states such as Illinois and Minnesota are considered radar detector-friendly, California isn’t.
